Clearly they knew, at least vaguely, what had to be done but delayed until it was too late. Sure, you have more responsabilities than time, but consider setting aside an hour twice a week to upgrade security.
The really nice thing about the organization of the book for this course is that it may be used as a workbook, with the most urgent and fundamental problems discussed first. This allows you to pop a book marker in it and advance the marker every few days.
